Two Forks One Plate

Keeping up with the needs of our eight kids is a daily challenge. My wife and I have to maintain a group calendar, lists, and an extensive knowledge base of doctors, teachers, and specialists for their various needs.

Some of our children are grown now, but they can require just as much of our time in various “adulting” tasks as the younger kids do for homework.

All in all, we have a very busy life. So I think we were both shocked when somehow the calendar gods smiled on us and miraculously gave us a Wednesday evening with zero kids.

When every day is extremely busy, I can truly appreciate these small moments to step away from the hectic normal and sit and appreciate the company of my love, who also is the other half of the team that makes our family function.

To truly mark the moment, we enjoyed a dinner out. Sitting quietly at a family owned Italian restaurant, we took the time to decompress and catch up.

When the waitress asked if we wanted dessert, I answered with our customary “two forks, one plate.” Because life is too short and too crazy to skip dessert with the one you love.

What customs have you developed with your loved one?
